How one remarkable resident proves that an active lifestyle has no age limit
At 102 years old, Hulda Griffin has a simple philosophy that keeps her going: “I just like to move.”
And move she does. Twice daily, year-round, you’ll find Hulda making her way around the entire Wyndemere campus—not just the main building, but around all the buildings. Late morning and early evening, rain or shine. “If it’s raining, I walk the halls,” she says matter-of-factly.
For nearly 11 years, Hulda has called Wyndemere home, and she credits her active lifestyle for helping her stay vibrant well past the century mark. But walking isn’t her only activity. She participates in yoga twice a week and attends Shape Up classes, constantly challenging herself to stay engaged and healthy.
“I go to some exercise classes like yoga and Shape Up, but I don’t think that’s enough exercise,” Hulda explains. “I know walking is good for you. So that’s why I walk so much.”
More Than Just Fitness: A Community That Keeps You Moving
Hulda’s dedication to movement was inspired by a conversation with Wyndemere’s wellness team. When she mentioned to the nurse that she was experiencing discomfort from sitting too long while sewing, knitting, and watching TV, she received advice that changed her routine.
“She said, ‘You can’t sit that long, Hulda. Those muscles are taking a beating. You don’t move enough,’ ” Hulda recalls. That gentle guidance reinforced what she already knew: Staying active is essential.
This kind of personalized attention is what makes Wyndemere special. Our wellness programs and attentive staff help residents of all ages find the right balance of activity and rest, encouraging healthy habits that support independence and vitality.
A Life Well Lived, Still Being Lived
Hulda’s zest for life isn’t new—it’s been her defining characteristic for over a century. A high school baton twirler who led the marching band, she met her future husband because they both played drums. He was the handsome quarterback; she was drawn to his good looks and talent. They were married at 23, high-school sweethearts who built a life together.
During World War II, while her future husband served overseas, Hulda worked for the government in Washington, D.C., living across from the Lincoln Memorial. “I had a ball,” she admits. “It’s a shame to say it, but I had more fun than sadness.”
That spirit—finding joy, staying engaged, keeping moving—has carried her through a remarkable life. And reflecting on it all during our interview, she said something that perfectly captures her outlook: “I think I had a really neat life, but I didn’t realize talking to you. I’m thinking, ‘Yeah, damn, that was fun.’ ”
Why Wyndemere? A Community That Gets It
When asked what made her choose Wyndemere almost 11 years ago, Hulda’s answer was simple: the people. Specifically, the sales team member who helped her—someone who “was so nice and so kind and really on the ball … she just had a good personality.”
But it wasn’t just one person. It’s been the entire experience.
“I’m perfectly satisfied with everything. I really am,” Hulda says. When asked to describe the community, she doesn’t hesitate: “They’re friendly and helpful. I can’t think of any negatives.”
Her daily walks have another benefit beyond fitness—connection. “That’s how I know so many people,” she explains. “I can tell if somebody’s willing to talk a little.”
That sense of community, combined with programs and amenities that encourage active living, is what makes Wyndemere more than just a place to live—it’s a place to thrive, no matter your age.
The Wyndemere Difference: Active Living at Every Age
Hulda’s story illustrates what we believe at Wyndemere: an active, engaged lifestyle doesn’t have an expiration date.
